hawaii: food

bucket-list item #6. lay on a beach in hawaii (november, 2012).

we travelled to the island of oahu and i lay on quite a few beaches. my all-time favourite was ko olina beach resort (lagoon three) at the marriott – comfy tanning chairs, bar service pretty much on the beach (and the only one where alcohol is actually allowed on the beach), and the most serene and calming beach background to look at… what more do you need?

i also ate quite well. the pineapples in hawaii are unreal – i have never tasted pineapples so succulent and sweet, and it was consistently like that everywhere we went. the fish tacos (from duke’s) were made with the freshest catch of the day and the calamari (from duke’s and tiki’s grill & bar) was amazing. the ahi poke was awesome – i had the bowl from tiki’s grill & bar and just the appetizer from island fine burgers & drinks.

we stumbled upon a shrimp truck/shack one day (kahuku grill) that carried “world famous coconut macadamia shrimp” and of course we had to give it a try. AMAZING. even the rice that came with it was buttery and garlicy, with a hint of dill. their cowboy burger was soooooo good too… and so hawaiian with that juicy ring of pineapple in it. on the same day, we went to a luau at the polynesian center and i have no idea how we managed to eat more, from the pig roast to the noodles that were almost impossible to pick up and eat. one of the highlights of that buffet for me were their pineapple bars on the dessert table.

mahalo hawaii!
